  • Research summary

Considering the high prevalence rates, patients in secure forensic hospitals are in a high risk category for having witnessed self harm and suicidal behaviour, including ideation, attempted and completed suicide, which can lead to a range of negative outcomes. Staff working in such settings provide crucial support to patients and therefore may be a protective factor against the impact that self harm and suicidal behaviour can have. However, staff are also likely to have experienced such behaviour in the patients that they care for which can also lead to negative outcomes therefore it is important that they too receive appropriate support.

The aim of this research is to explore the experiences of both staff and patients in a secure forensic hospital who have experienced others self harm and suicidal behaviour. Therefore this research will take place in a medium secure forensic hospital in the North of England.

Semi-structured interviews will be conducted to explore the experience of participants. A topic guide and prompt questions will be used, however participants will have the freedom to discuss anything which they feel is important. Interviews will be carried out directly with the participant in a private room at the hospital and will be audio recorded.
Once the interview is complete, the recording will be transcribed by the researcher and anonymised.

Once all the interviews have been transcribed the data will be analysed. Data analysis will follow Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) guidelines.
