  • Research summary

Ethnic inequalities in health represent a matter of ongoing public enquiry in the UK (Mahase, 2022). It is therefore imperative to understand access and delivery of care from the perspective of patients, healthcare professionals and stakeholders in minority ethnic mental health. Moreover, The NHS Long-Term Plan (NHS, 2019) brings to the fore the need for reform for both adult mental health care for common mental illnesses (such as depression) as well as health inequalities (including those by ethnicity).

This study aims to understand ethnic inequalities in the prescribing of antidepressants in primary care for the South Asian diaspora. The study will use qualitative methods, including interviews and focus group discussions to capture a range of perspectives on this topic. Participants will include primary care patients, healthcare professionals, other stakeholders in South Asian mental health (e.g. professionals working in community, local authority, and third sector organisations), and members of the South Asian community. Data will be analysed using reflexive thematic analysis.
