Research summary
The Oxford Vegetarian Study was established in 1980. Ethics approval was not required in 1980 for a questionnaire-based observational study of volunteers that did not involve the NHS in recruitment. This was confirmed by ONS who approved the study, and flagged the participants at the time of recruitment. During the 33 years that the study has been running, we have received continuous peer-reviewed funding and have published 18 papers in peer-reviewed medical journals including 3 in the British Medical Journal. We are applying for approval for a further 5 year follow-up (until 2020) of the Oxford Vegetarian Study cohort for incident cancers and deaths.
