Research summary
There is growing evidence that use of social media and other on-line activities can contribute to the development and maintenance of eating disorders (ED). It is recommended that Clinicians enquire about children and young people’s (CYP) use of the internet at initial assessment and it is recognised that there are clinical risks which should be evaluated inherent in this activity (Dubicka and Theodosiou, 2019). We work within a specialist Community Eating Disorder team and we have developed a questionnaire designed to elicit a full range of on-line activity from CYP presenting with eating disorders. The questionnaire is designed as a clinical tool which can be used as part of standard assessment by eating disorder clinicians. We have been informed by current research, experts in this field and patients at various stages of recovery from eating disorders.
This qualitative study aims to evaluate our current questionnaire. We wish to seek CYP’s and clinician’s views of this questionnaire. The results of this qualitative evaluation will be used to modify the questionnaire if indicated. We plan to seek funding to conduct a quantitative study of the impact of on-line activity on the development of eating disorders in CYP. To complete this qualitative study we plan to conduct interviews with CYP and their clinicians after they have completed the questionnaire at their initial assessment by an eating disorder service.REC name
