  • Research summary

The Northern Ireland Cohort for the Longitudinal Study of Ageing (NICOLA) is a public health study involving men and women aged 50 years and over living in Northern Ireland who will voluntarily be followed over a number of years
The study, set up by the Centre for Public Health in 2013 at Queen’s University Belfast aims to provide information on the health, social and economic circumstances of men and women as they grow older in Northern Ireland and how their circumstances may change over those years
Households were identified that had people aged 50 years and over living in them, and a sample representative of Northern Ireland as a whole was drawn from this. The then employed market research company sought the participation from appropriate members within those identified households.
The primary objective is to collect longitudinal data on physical and mental health, well-being, disability, economic circumstances, social participation and connectedness as people plan for, move into and progress beyond retirement.
Information is obtained through a fieldwork survey utilising a CAPI (Computer Assisted Personal Interview), Self Completion Questionnaire(s) which the participant completes in their own time and a Physical Health Assessment
This application is for Wave 3 of the study and the questions asked will mostly include follow on from the previous interviews carried out in Waves 1 and 2 so that changes in circumstances can be tracked, as well as including some new elements to the questionnaire. New participants will also be invited to take part at this wave under similar sample criteria as previous waves.
There are many challenging issues facing our society and the economy, but one that affects virtually every aspect of life is the fact that people are living longer and the population is ageing. The evidence based data gathered will be available to academics, government policy makers, public services providing the opportunity to prepare and cater for the increasing ageing population in Northern Ireland.
