  • Research summary

Police figures for England and Wales recorded offences involving knives and sharp instruments had increased to 48,725, in the end of September 2023, a 5% increase, (Ben Kinsella Trust, 2024). The homicide rate for Black people is 5 times higher compared to their 3% representation in the UK. This research aims to hear the narratives of young Black males who use and carry weapons so that their voices can be heard. Only the young people can answer their motivations for carrying or using weapons (Silvestri, 2009). The research participants will be young people who meet the inclusion criteria and are NHS users across three South West London Boroughs, two participants from each Borough, a total of six. Their data will provide insight into how the NHS can better engage and work with these users. Recently, there has been a lot of research into youth violence, however this study goes further because it concentrates on NHS outreach, a neglected area. Furthermore, I am a middle-aged Black female registered counselling psychologist with 8 years clinical experience with young people who offend, this lived and clinical experience provides me with skills to interact with young people in an honest, non-judgemental and open way, which will provide data to shape NHS future interventions.
I hope to start the research January 2025, the first step will be recruiting young people, I will do this by contacting the Youth Justice Services in all three Boroughs which NHS users are based and ask case workers to suggest young people who are interested in being participants. Interviews with the participants will take a maximum of ninety minutes. The next steps are data analysis and writing the research report, the study will end on 31st August 2025, however participant data gathering would have finished March 2025.
