  • Research summary

In the UK, it is estimated that 1 in 14 people over 65 will develop dementia, with the diagnosis rate increasing to 1 in 6 people over 80 years old. Recently, it was estimated that one third of cases of Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented through changes in seven modifiable risk factors.

The MOVE study is now focusing on the development of interventions that can be used on a smartphone device that will help patients to engage in healthy behaviours, with a view to lowering the potential risk of getting dementia. The key part of the intervention will be web-based portal that will allow health professionals to support their patients in reaching healthy behaviours’ goals.

The key aim of this project is to learn about the views and opinions of our key stakeholders (patients, healthcare professionals and commisioners) on using digital technologies to support patients in primary care and community settings to engage in healthy behaviours that could make a difference to a person’s risk of getting dementia.

As part of the study, we will show our key stakeholders an example of a web-based portal (health care professionals, commisioners) or mobile application (patients) to find out which features they like, which features they do not like and what will make web-based portal and mobile application more helpful for them.

We will be interviewing individually 15-25 participants from primary care settings, for example from GP practices or from the Join Dementia Research register. We will also interview up to 40 GPs, other health care professionals, commissioners and policy makers via four focus groups. In total, we will be interviewing up to 65 people.
