Research summary
Depression is common in people with physical illnesses and is known to lead to poorer health outcomes. The reasons for this are unclear but one possibility is that the experience of depression is different in those with a physical illness compared to those who are depressed but are otherwise healthy. The aim of this study is to understand the similarities and differences in the experience of depression among those individuals with depression by itself or alongside another illness such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease or arthritis. In order to do this we will conduct 1:1 interviews of patients who fit in to each of these categories. Up to 60 participants will be recruited from primary care and via recruitment posters. Data will be audio-recorded and transcribed prior to being analysed using a technique called comparative thematic analysis. This analysis will allow us to look for patterns in the data to compare what people tell us about their experiences. This research will help us better understand how depression is different in the physically ill compared to those without a physical illness.
