Research summary
Liver cirrhosis is a severe medical condition occurring as a consequence of liver disease. It can be secondary to many processes that damage the liver and is generally irreversible. Whilst its long-term prognosis is poor with a 10-year mortality of 34-66%, cirrhosis currently has no definitive treatment but rather focuses on preventing its progression and complications. In the late stages, liver transplant is the only option of treatment.
In an observational study, we aim to use a hand held microscope device placed under ones tongue, and a special recording sticker placed on ones hand, to study the blood flow and oxygen levels in very small blood vessels and muscle. We hope to do this in 84 patients.
This study will, for the first time, directly measure the blood flow in cirrhotic patients and thus provide doctors with a better understanding of the disease process. The findings of this study will be used to try and improve the current treatment of patients with cirrhosis, and ultimately allow doctors to develop a method of halting the disease process.
