Research summary
Patients with suspected stable coronary artery disease (angina) require imaging to make a diagnosis. Patients may have to wait for a scan to be scheduled and the scan itself involves ionising radiation. Recently, blood tests (for a protein called troponin) that are used to make diagnoses of heart attacks have improved. Singulex is a company that manufactures a troponin test with very high sensitivity. The test can detect extremely small amounts of troponin. Research in Switzerland suggests that one blood test could allow doctors to rule out angina without the need for scans. However, more research is needed before this is used in practice. We aim to determine the diagnostic accuracy of this new blood test.
We will ask patients attending specialist clinics to which they are referred when they experience chest pain (eg the Rapid Access Chest Pain Clinic) to participate in this study. All patients have a suspected diagnosis of angina and will require scans as part of their routine care. If a patient chooses to take part, we will draw two additional blood samples in clinic. We will then use the patient's hospital records to determine the results of the final scans, and to calculate the diagnostic accuracy of the new troponin blood test. The care of patients will not be affected in any way other than the need to collect two additional samples (approximately 5ml) of venous blood.
