Research summary
The NICE guidelines CG161 (2013) state 'People aged 65 and older have the highest risk of falling, with 30% of people older than 65 and 50% of people older than 80 falling at least once a year'. It also recommends that fear of falling is a risk factor for falls and should be assessed. It is important for clinicians to have a better understanding of the experience of the fear of falling, so they can use this when assessing and treating patients.
Patients aged 65 years old and over with a history of falling in the last 6 months who report a fear of falling will be recruited from Kent Community Health Care Foundation Trust fall prevention clinics. The research will be a video recorded semi structured interview in the patients home where discussions will aim to give insight into the fear of falling. The interview could be between one- two hours in length. One week later the participants will be shown their video interview and ensure it is a true reflection of their experience. The video recordings will be transcribed, and then analysed.
