Research summary
A diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis is believed by the general population as a condition that affects older people (McDonagh and Tattersall, 2019). However, the incidence in the United Kingdom (UK) of children under 16 years old diagnosed with Juvenile Idiopathic arthritis JIA) is 1 in 1,000. The research question “What is the lived experience of young adults with inflammatory arthritis in Northern Ireland and their transition experience to the adult rheumatology services?”
The aim of this proposed research project is to explore the ‘lived experience’ of young adults with inflammatory arthritis living in Northern Ireland. There has not been any research within Northern Ireland on this subject area for this client-group. Therefore, this will potentially fill a knowledge gap for us in both understanding the feelings of the lived experience of the participants and how we could help them managing their condition, on a short and long-term basis.
There will be a maximum of ten participants. Eligible participants are individuals with a diagnosis of inflammatory arthritis, aged 16-23 years living in Northern Ireland who attend either the children’s rheumatology services or have transferred to adult rheumatology services in the last three years. The study will be conducted over all the Health and Social Care Trusts within Northern Ireland. The participants will take part in an interview which will be either by telephone or using MICROSOFT TEAMS phone call without camera. The interview will be recorded and should last a maximum of one hour. Each participant will only be asked to have one interview.
The study will have a timeframe from September 2022 until July 2023 when all the recruitment should be completed.REC name
