  • Data collection arrangements

In most cases prospective consent will be sought. However, some ethically approved specific research studies may already have approval for transfer of tissue and samples into a tissue bank, so prospective consent will not be necessary for these particular cases.

The following samples will be collected that are surplus to clinical requirements:
    - Lung tissue samples (healthy and malignant tissue)
    - Pleural fluid
    - Ascitic fluid
    - Bone marrow
    - Skin and muscle biopsies
    - Nasal polyp tissue

The following samples will be collected for research purposes only:
    - Lung tissue (additional sample during a clinical investigation)
    - Blood
    - Urine
    - Plucked hair
    - Saliva
    - Mouth washes
    - Nasal swab
    - Sputum (spit sample)
    - Nasal polyp tissue
    - Faecal samples
    - Existing research samples from existing ethically approved research studies with appropriate ethical approval/ consent.

For participants who have consented to the research tissue bank, samples will be linked to relevant clinical and demographic data. Data will include diagnosis, histological grade, tumour site, tumour stage, age, family history and
other relevant clinical information including imaging results, demographics, treatment and clinical outcome. Data will be derived from health records and NHS databases. Data collected that is stored will be stored linked-anonymised,
being identifiable only by the unique participant ID. Data will also be obtained from previous research data if the participant had taken part in any respiratory research studies.

  • Research programme

Research will only be undertaken that is approved by the Respiratory theme BRC scientific committee via a formal application to the RTB. Research must comply with the generic ethical approval of this research tissue bank and protocol. Applicants, both internal (within the Leicester Respiratory Research group) and external (both academics and commercial partners) are invited to apply to use the research tissue bank and associated data.
