Research summary
It has been known for some time that Specialist Nurses offering post discharge education to patients with heart failure, will avoid unnecessary hospital re-admission, reduce cost to the health care system and be effective in improving self care and patient survival rates (Stromberg et al. 2003; McAlister, Stewart, Ferrua, & McMurray, 2004). Care delivered by Heart Failure Specialists, and the prescription of evidence-based medication and treatments for heart failure has a considerable impact on prognosis and life expectancy (NICE, 2010). The researcher proposes to explore how the educational materials (verbal, visual, written) used to provide information to heart failure patients by a heart failure specialist nurse, impacts on a patient’s understanding of heart failure and self care. From an interpretative perspective using a phenomenological methodology that is using a method to ascertain the lived experience of the patient, (Greenhalagh & Taylor 1997) it is envisaged the research findings may assist with evaluation and reflection on current practice by the specialist team, (Koshy & Waterman 2011).\nThe overall aim of the research is to explore the self care educational journey of the heart failure patient.\n Objectives include\n\n•\tTo understand how the educational materials facilitate understanding of a heart failure diagnosis. \n•\tTo gain further understanding about the influence that verbal, written and visual educational materials have on patients’ self care.\n•\tTo facilitate team reflection and evaluation on practice through the lived experience of the heart failure patient and their self care journey.\n ( Koshy,Koshy & Waterman 2011)\n
