  • Research summary

NICE guidelines state that a laparoscopic cholecystectomy should be performed on emergency patients with cholecystitis within one week[1]. However, there is significant variation in practice. Our aim is to investigate how delays in emergency laparoscopic cholecystectomy affect patient outcome.\n \nWe are proposing a retrospective review of approximately 200 patients who have been for emergency gallbladder surgery. We will use SciStore, a results reporting system, and Theatreman, a system which has the capability to store information on operations that have happened in theatre, as well as paper notes to identify appropriate patients and collect data in the form of: demographic data, details of the operation, any complications, and pre operative blood results. The only identifiable data that will be collected will be CHI numbers. This is a topical subject with little existing UK literature to our knowledge.\n\n1. NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries.
