Research summary
Currently there is a lack of information on how best to manage malnutrition (i.e. being thin or losing weight) in older people in the community. Before designing and testing new interventions it is important to understand why older people in the community become malnourished and how malnutrition impacts on their use of health and social care resources. It is also important to know how malnutrition impacts on individuals in terms of their quality of life and ability to undertake everyday activities. Since we know that the management of malnutrition in the community is currently sub-optimal we also plan to collect information on how many people currently receive nutritional interventions in the community, and to characterise the nature and extent of those interventions.
This study has been designed to capture data on how malnutrition impacts on older peoples' use of health and social care resources and how it impacts on their quality of life and ability to perform everyday activities. It will also provide us with data on how malnutrition is currently managed in the community (i.e. usual care).
The data collected during this study will be used to inform the future design and feasibility testing of new interventions to better manage malnutrition in the community.
