Research summary
Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) is the commonest large-vessel vasculitis of older adults (>=50 years) and affects branches of the external carotid, ciliary and retinal arteries. If left untreated permanent loss of vision can occur. Early recognition is critical to prevent visual loss, that otherwise occurs in up to 20% of cases. Once high-dose corticosteroids are started, visual loss is rare. To date, little is known about the long term impact of GCA particularly within the primary care setting. This project aims to investigate the health care processes and health status outcomes of primary care patients with GCA using a cross-sectional questionnaire and linked retrospective medical record review.
