  • Research summary

Dental decay is still one of the major health problems that affect many children. A recent survey showed that nearly a third (31%) of 5 year olds and nearly a half (46%) of 8 year olds had obvious decay experience in their baby teeth. Dental decay has an impact on the quality of life of those children. It affects their eating, sleep, and social activities. Many of these children will have to be treated under general anaesthesia due to the extensive dental decay or the fact that many of them are no cooperative to get the treatment while they are awake.
The aim of this project is to study the impact of the dental decay on the quality of life of these children. We will investigate how the dental decay affects the life style of the children, their eating, sleeping and the social interaction with others. Parents/care givers, with children referred to Leeds Dental Institute, for teeth extraction under general anaesthesia will be approached. Parents/ care givers who agree to participate will be asked to fill a questionnaire on the day of the dental operation. Then after 6 to 8 weeks, I will follow up with a telephone call and parents will be asked to answer the similar questionnaire after the treatment.
