Research summary
We are seeking to recruit a group of adult volunteers able to donate stool samples for laboratory-based experiments. The research uses freshly produced stool samples from healthy volunteers that are added to one of two types of incubation systems that model the behaviour of the colon. This model will be used for a wide range of basic science experiments. Using these systems the interaction between bacteria and their effects on, and responses to, different food components and pharmaceutical products can be assessed. Bacterial populations can be analysed over time using both traditional culturing methods and modern approaches based on analysis of bacterial DNA or RNA. The system can also be used to measure breakdown products from foods or pharmaceutical products.
