  • Research summary

Transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy (ATTR-CM), is a heart muscle disease that stops the heart muscle working properly. With an ageing population, it is increasingly common but untreated, it has a poor prognosis. Several novel expensive treatments have become available, although we do not understand exactly how they work and why some patients respond, and others do not. The underlying disease process involved in development of ATTR-CM is also not properly understood although some pre clinical studies suggest increased calcium deposits along with protein is the main pathology involved. We aim to better understand the underlying disease process and how the new treatments work by the means of a novel imaging technique in this study.
