Research summary
Following the launch of the NHS long term plan, NHS England is rolling out a programme of Lung Health Checks (LHCs) across England. Hull is one of the initial sites to participate, with the aim of early identification of a range of health problems including lung cancer. It is anticipated that over 15,000 lung health checks will be undertaken in Hull over an 18 month period. Lung Health Checks will identify a broad range of health problems in people, a significant proportion of whom will not have previously presented to a healthcare professional with symptoms.
LHC participants represent a diverse population with the potential to improve our understanding of the evolution of a range of diseases, the impact that they have on short, medium and long term outcomes and the interaction between symptoms and indices of lung and cardiovascular health and disease.
We will undertake a longitudinal cohort study to fully characterise LHC participants and assess their short, medium and long term health outcomes. This study will not impact the care or treatment that patients receive.
We will evaluate the overall impact of targeted LHC in this population and the short, medium and long term health outcomes. Anonymised data collected during this longitudinal cohort study will be made available to other researchers through a robust governance framework.
