Research summary
This exploratory qualitative study will examine the factors which influence the health behaviours of Gypsy Traveller women during pregnancy. A systematic literature search has identified a gap in the literature regarding pregnant Gypsy Traveller women and their health behaviours.
Phenomenology is the philosophical approach that will be taken during this study. Phenomenological inquiry is based on the founding principle that experience should be examined in the way that it occurs (Smith et al., 2009). Every day experiences are gathered, described and reflected upon to present the lived experience (Todres and Holloway, 2010).
Therefore, a purposive sample of around 15 pregnant Gypsy Traveller women will be recruited and data collected by semi-structured interviews to gain an insight into their subjective experiences of pregnancy and health behaviours.
Data analysis will be undertaken using a framework analysis (Ritchie and Spencer 1994) involving both structural and textural descriptions of the personal experiences’.
The findings of the study will influence recommendations for enhancing midwifery practice, education and health promotion to enable more effective delivery of woman centred care (Leap, 2009) to Gypsy Traveller families.
Dissemination of findings and recommendations will be via local, regional and national networks and publication.REC name
