Research summary
At the Great North Children’s Hospital (GNCH) we are committed to improving the quality of care, and putting patients at the heart of what we do. A recent report stated the need for a shared vision for children’s services. Developing a common vision requires good understanding of how the NHS improves peoples health from the patients perspective. It is important that this is not just the views of hospital staff. High quality research, and improved health outcomes for children, depend on listening to the voices of children and young people, as well as their families and carers, and taking account of their experiences, priorities and perspectives.
We know that children and families want to be seen by dedicated specially trained staff. Research tells us that specialist physiotherapists may be able to help improve children’s healthcare. Physiotherapy is a healthcare profession that promotes the health and wellbeing of all. Physiotherapists are responsible for the assessment and physical rehabilitation of those needing treatment due to accident, injury, ageing, disease or disability.
Children’s physiotherapy is the treatment and care of babies, children and young people. Children’s physiotherapists bring their skills as physiotherapists and have additional knowledge and experience of child development and of childhood disability.
The researcher is hoping to study children’s and parents views of a new specialist physiotherapy clinic. She is interested in finding out about what parents think and also what children and young people think.
