Research summary
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the collective term for a group of lung diseases. COPD affects up to 174 million people worldwide and approximately 3 million people die each year from COPD or COPD-related complications. Although COPD is a highly preventable and treatable disease, it represents a major economic burden on healthcare systems.
This is a prospective, non-interventional, genomics study. The focus of the study is to research how our genes, environment and lifestyle influence disease risk, disease subtype, disease progression and drug response. We will do this by using techniques such as whole genome sequencing (WGS), which allows us to capture the full spectrum of genetic variation in an individual’s genome (their complete set of genes).
We will conduct the research by collecting blood samples (containing our genetic material – DNA, RNA and proteins), a lifestyle questionnaire, two COPD specific questionnaires, physical assessments and relevant medical information from fully-consented individuals with COPD. Our genetic material is like an instruction manual containing the information needed to make, run and repair each person. In some cases, changes in our genetic material can lead to health problems.
This genomics study has tremendous potential to translate to health improvement for future patients. Specifically, the findings from this study may be used to better diagnose, predict progression and tailor treatment based on a person’s genetic makeup. It may also lead to the identification of new drug targets for the development of novel therapeutics.
