Research summary
Persons with haemophilia (PWH) are now living longer, with a life expectancy near to that of the general population. Recurrent bleeding into the joints causes a haemophilia arthropathy and leaves PWH with a reduction in the joint range of movement, reduced muscle strength and pain. These sequelae are seen in the aging general population and lead to an increased risk and reported falls rate. It has been reported that PWH have an increased risk of falling at a younger age due to the joint damage happening earlier in their life. However, no published study to our knowledge has focused on the experiences of men with haemophilia regarding their reduced mobility in relation to altered balance and falling. This study will carry out semi structured interviews with PWH over 40 years of age to explore their experiences of mobility, balance and falls. Three balance scores which have already been developed and used in other patient groups, will also be trialled with the participants. The views of the participants on the appropriateness and ease of use, will be assessed. The results will then be analysed to see if they correlate with the experiences of the participants.
