Research summary
Only 40% of people with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) participate in regular exercise. Common reasons cited are lack of clarity on the benefits and risks of exercising with T1D and lack of knowledge as to how to maintain glucose in a safe range before, during and after exercise.
Guidance on how best to manage T1D for exercise is available but these are based on experiments undertaken in controlled laboratory conditions rather than the “real world”. As a result patients describe dissatisfaction with the quality and accuracy of the current exercise guidance.
Our aim is to understand the “real world” benefits and risks of regular exercise in people with T1D.
All individuals with T1D who have signed up to run the Swansea Half Marathon on the 24th June 2018, as part of the world record attempt for the most number of people with T1DM to run a half marathon, will be sent information about the study. Those who consent will fill out a questionnaire and do a urine and blood test 6-8 weeks before and 1 week before the half marathon. They will also be asked to keep a training diary and wear a continuous glucose monitor for 6-8 weeks before, whilst doing the half marathon and for 2 weeks after.
These tests will enable us to determine how training for and competing in a half marathon affects average blood glucose control, frequency of high and low blood glucoses, level of fat in the blood, insulin production and number and function of T-cells. It will also enable us to determine whether there are any predictors as to who is at risk of having low or high blood glucose levels with exercise and the best way of managing glucose when training for and competing in a half marathon.
