Research summary
This study sets out to investigate the experiences of a small sample of older adults following a fracture of the distal radius (broken wrist) of their dominant hand.
The aim of the study is to:
• explore the experiences of older people who have undergone a fracture of the distal radius (with or without a fracture of the distal ulna) of their dominant hand, managed conservatively.
• explore Older Peoples’ perspectives of the information provided to them from initial management into the rehabilitation stage after immobilisation is removed.
• gain an understanding of the expectations of Older People following a fracture of the distal radius
• explore Older Peoples’ experiences of hand therapy following a fracture of the distal radius of the dominant hand.
• critically analyse the data generated
• make recommendations for the improvement of clinical practice of treating people with a fracture of their distal radius. This will be done by a semi-structured face to face interview. The researcher will ask some open questions in a private room in the Therapies Out patient Department. The interviews will be transcribed and analysed for common themes.
Previous studies have demonstrated that 8-10 participants may provide sufficient data for meaningful analysis.
