  • Research summary

Tooth auto-transplantation is a surgical procedure which involves tooth extraction from one position and replantation of the tooth in the same or another position inside the mouth of the same person.

It is extremely beneficial for growing patients who had lost their teeth as it preserves the volume of alveolar bone and the vitality of the periodontium and permitting continued skeletal growth and development.

This qualitative study aims to explore patients, parents/carers, and dental team experience with tooth auto-transplant.

Participant information sheets, invitation letter and consent forms will be sent to all participants at least five days before any interview is due to take place.
The study sample will include patients (aged nine years old and above) who have been considered for or had or are having tooth auto-transplantation. In addition, their parents/carers, and inter-disciplinary dental team will be included.

We anticipate around 30 participants to be recruited however more participants might be required. Date collection and analysis will occur continuously and will continue until data saturation of themes is reached.

The semi-structured interviews will be carried out at a time convenient to participant at the participant’s home by Amal Albalooshy. However, if participants prefer to have the interview at a location other than their homes, they will be undertaken at Leeds Dental Institute. Each interview will take around 45 minutes.
A specific interview topic guide will be used for each group. The topic guide is not exhaustive and it is anticipated that new topics generated by the participant may be used to inform and update further interviews in line with a method of constant comparison.

Interviews will be conducted at different stages of tooth auto-transplantation pathway. Areas to be explored via interviews are: participants experience, oral health problems, functional, social and emotional well-being and life over all and satisfaction.
