Research summary
I propose to investigate the way in which fathers of working age experience and cope with caring for a son/daughter with psychosis. I aim to provide an in-depth account of these fathers’ experiences and relate their experiences to the existing literature. Questions will be asked around the impact or consequences of the role on these fathers to gain an understanding of what they may be experiencing or ‘coping with’. They will then be asked what they ‘do’ in response, ‘what helps’ or how they ‘manage’ different aspects of the role, including caring for themselves and managing the impact on them (e.g. burden, low mood or anxiety). I anticipate that some positive outcomes may also be reported, but the emphasis of this study is on coping and so this will be reported but will not be the focus.
Additionally, I am keen to understand what factors are identified as relevant to coping, such as demands of paid employment or availability of social support. I hope to gain some insight into what enables coping in this context and what ‘coping’ looks like for these fathers. It is hoped that this will help to identify areas for further exploration in this group.REC name
