  • Research summary

An open fracture is a rare and difficult injury to treat. Recovery often requires extensive surgery and a long period of recouperation; complications such as infection are common and occasionally lead to loss of the limb. Often the outcome for people who have recovered from these injuries is incomplete and patients suffer varying degrees of physical and psychological disability which is often associated with social and financial loss.

Due to the emergency, traumatic and rare nature of these injuries, little research has been done in this area. We would like to know more about how best to treat these injuries to meet the needs of this group.

We propose a qualitative study with the following objectives:
    - Explore the recovery experiences of adults sustaining a severe limb injury.
    - Discuss patient perceptions of their healthcare following injury.
    - Utilise information collated to inform further research.

This qualitative study will take the format of semi-structured interviews. We will use a methodological framework: Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis which has been used extensively in a healthcare setting. The framework is intended for use in areas where the researcher wishes to explore patient experience.

Participants will include adult patients who have recovered from a severe open fracture, under the care of Nottingham University Hospitals. The participants will be contacted regarding involvement in the study initially by post. Those wishing to take part will undergo an interview which will take place on a one-to-one basis at Queens Medical Centre. The participant will have opportunity to ask any questions before committing to the study, and written informed consent will be taken in each case. We will seek up to 10 participants.

The interview will be transcribed and analysed by the student researcher involved in the project.
