Research summary
The overall aim is to explore the lived experience of women with breast cancer undergoing a mastectomy (breast removal) without reconstruction being discharged within 23 hours in the Breast Unit at Saint Georges Hospital. In order to achieve the aim of the study the following broad question was formulated as the focus for investigation “What is the experience of mastectomy patients on the 23 hour pathway?” (This is model of care that was introduced to the hospital in 2010 and involves patients going home within 23 hours with drains , previously in patient stay was significantly longer. The focus of the research will be to develop an in-depth understanding of this group of participants. It is estimated that data collection for the study will last approx. 6 months recruiting between 8-10 patients who will undergo semi structured taped interviews to describe their experience.
