Research summary
Recent years have seen the introduction of new surgery undertaken in the NHS in the UK to transplant hands. To complement published medical outcomes, this study will focus on the experience of receiving a hand transplant. To do this we aim to interview those who have received a hand transplant at least 3 months prior to interview to produce a rich data set which will be analysed to identify themes that reflect these experiences. This would then allow researchers to describe the experiences and provides an opportunity to feed back general themes to hand transplant teams about things that are being done well and areas that require improvement. We also hope that the study findings could help future recipients of a hand transplant through supporting their decision making and managing their expectations.
