Research summary
This research seeks to look at the experiences of young people within one medium secure hospital (Ardenleigh FCAMHS), in order to better understand their experiences and unique treatment needs. We will do this using surveys and questionnaires. Whilst mental health difficulties in gang affected youths is common, there is very little research that supports us to understand what the needs of these young people are, for treatment and desistance. This research aim to better understand the experiences of young people in one FCAMHS site, in order to better inform recommendations for prevention and treatment. Regarding treatment, the research will help us to understand if this population has similar or unique treatment needs to young people who access mainstream service for violence or mental health needs, as recommended by the NICE guidelines.
The research will use an opportunistic sample of approximately 10 young people (aged between 12 - 19) who are detained in one medium secure hospital site (Ardenleigh FCAMHS, Birmingham). Young people will be interviewed for 1 hour using a semi-structured interview that looks at their experiences of education, community engagement, social media usage, history of violence and future goals.
