  • Research summary

There is a large evidence base that shows there are individuals who are autistic and also experience psychosis. The primary focus of this literature appears to be on studying prevalence rates, overlapping symptoms, diagnostic challenges, and increased risk factors for individuals who experience both conditions. As such, the experience of living with these experiences is often still considered poorly understood and labelled as ‘complex’. To contribute towards this gap in understanding what the experience is of living with these two conditions, it is thought necessary to explore the lived experience of those individuals who are diagnosed with both. The aim of this proposed study is to explore the lived experience of individuals with co-occurring autism and psychosis using a qualitative approach. A semi-structured interview methodology will be employed to ensure a subjective, rich account of an individual’s experience can be captured. Exploring first-hand accounts of individuals who experience this co-occurrence will provide insight into what it is like to live with autism and psychosis, highlight any similarities or differences between individuals’ experiences and provide clinicians with an understanding of how to support and manage this experience.
