  • Research summary

This research study aims to explore the personal experiences of binge eating and experiences of treatment seeking in individuals with a diagnosis of Binge Eating Disorder. There is currently limited research specifically investigating at Binge Eating Disorder, which is perhaps due to it only recently (May 2013) being recognised as a specific eating disorder. In particular, there is limited research considering individuals' experiences of Binge Eating Disorder. Understanding individuals experiences of binge eating and treatment seeking has the potential to help to identify possible barriers to accessing treatment and to allow some insight into the current help-seeking choices and experiences of individuals. This understanding has implications for both the research base for Binge Eating Disorder and service development.

Individuals will be recruited from a specialist eating disorder service, all participants must have been given a diagnosis of Binge Eating Disorder and currently be involved within the specialist service. Participants will be invited to take part in a semi-structured interview with the Chief Investigator, which will explore their experiences of binge eating and experiences of treatment seeking. This is expected to last between 30 minutes and one hour, and will be audio recorded for analysis. These interviews will be carried out in a clinical space at the eating disorder service. Participants will also be asked to complete a short questionnaire which asks demographic information; gender, age, martial status, length of diagnosis.

There will be no follow up required after the interview has taken place. Should participants feel any distress following the interviews or feel concerned, contact details for clinical staff will be given for them to contact.
