  • Research summary

Despite improved understanding of early pregnancy development, transfer of “good” quality embryos and optimization of factors that are known to influence pregnancy rates, we still have an incomplete understanding of why many IVF embryos fail to implant or progress.

Research amongst women who suffer multiple miscarriages has highlighted the importance of the blood clotting system in implantation of the embryo. Abnormalities in this system are associated with pregnancy loss.

We will assess for changes in whole blood haemostasis at different stages of the IVF cycle and their impact on IVF outcomes. Thromboelastrography (TEG), a blood test that takes a snapshot picture of the dynamic interplay between blood clotting and the clot-breakdown systems, will be used for this purpose.
