  • Research summary

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued guidelines to lead towards eradication of the hepatitis C virus by 2030. The targets mean that Hepatitis C services throughout the UK and the World need to increase the numbers of people with Hepatitis C (HCV) that they diagnose, treat and cure.

Locally HCV may be diagnosed in a variety of venues/pathways. This includes general practices and hospitals as well as targeted testing sites in drug treatment services and needle exchanges.

To evaluate the pathways we will look at every hepatitis C test taken in NHS Tayside since 1999 and determine the site/pathway of testing, the proportion of positive diagnosis per pathway and the numbers that go on to treatment and cure. We will also evaluate how economic each pathway is.

Some pathways we will analyse were one off experiments for a limited period of time. We may get additional information about these pathways from the published reports to help us determine their usefulness.

We anticipate that some of the pathways will be more productive with more positive diagnoses and some will be more cost effective. We would then aim to focus on expanding these pathways in order to increase their efficacy and to help us meet the WHO targets. The results will inform service design locally and nationally.
