Research summary
Coagulation testing look at how quickly a clot can form in order to prevent excess blood loss following surgery or damage. This study will look at coagulation tests performed within operating theatres (point of care) and within the laboratory. This is to assess whether point of care testing can be solely relied upon for the issue of blood products, or whether laboratory tests are required also. Patients would be elegiable if undergoing non-congenital cardiac surgery where the use of a bypass machine is required. Blood samples will be taken at three time periods (before, during and after the operation) and analysed using both point of care and laboratory methods. The study will only be carried out within the Golden Jubilee National Hospital. The study is expected to last for roughly 9 months from date of starting.
