Research summary
This project aims to evaluate whether using a peer marketing model is a feasible and acceptable means for promoting structured education for people with type 1 diabetes. However, the project is using type 1 diabetes as an exemplar condition. If the evaluation of the peer marketing model is proven to be successful it is believed that it could provide a background for other long term conditions. The Department of Health (2012) suggest that 15 million people in England have a long-term condition with 70% of the total health and social care spending attributed to caring for these individuals (DoH 2012). Secondary to this increasing burden on public health, a heightened emphasis is being placed on self-management skills through education. Marketing has been criticised for the poor uptake in education across many long-term conditions. One such education course for adults with Type 1 diabetes, Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE), has a less than 30% attendance rate, with 30% of these non- attenders never hearing of the course to begin with (Harris et al 2017). We believe peers are good advocates for the course, as they can easily discuss the pros and cons, whilst sharing personal experience. A peer marketing approach has been implemented within the diabetes services of KCH to increase uptake to DAFNE. This research project will evaluate the acceptability of this approach delivered within a clinical setting.
