  • Research summary

Traditionally, within an inpatient CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service), routine outcome measures, often rated by clinicians, are regularly implemented. However, in order to understand the individual’s recovery process, the use of service user informed recovery measures alongside other routine outcome measures is essential. Several measures of recovery in adults have been developed, however, only one known measure has been designed specifically to assess subjective recovery in young people with mental health problems; the RE-QUEST YP (John, Jeffries, Acuna-Rivera, Warren and Simonds, 2015).

An Initial evaluation of the RE-QUEST YP measure (John et al., 2015) concluded that this measure has the potential to be used in CAMHS services to assess recovery processes in young people with mental health difficulties. However, in order for this measure to become integrated into routine use within specialised Child and Adolescent Mental Health services, the psychometric properties of the RE-QUEST measure warrant further evaluation.

Therefore, the aim of this study is to evaluate the psychometric properties of RE-QUEST YP measure to establish its validity for routine use within inpatient CAMHS services.

This study aims to achieve this by asking young people who are inpatients within identified CAMHS service’s who have agreed to support this research project, to fill out the REQUEST YP questionnaire. They will also be asked about how easy and relevant the questionnaire was. The results will then be used to see if the measure is good enough to be used regularly by staff working on Child and Adolescent inpatient wards. A small number of participants will also be asked to participate in a semi structured questionnaire to provide greater insight into how relevant the REQUEST measure is to the young people, and to inform any further amendments to the measure.
