Research summary
With the number of people living with dementia increasing, there is an urgent need to understand how to build resilience to empower people with dementia and enable those supporting them to achieve positive outcomes and live as well as possible post-diagnosis. This project aims to co-create a resilience-building framework for people with dementia and their carers in a three-phased approach. Phase 1 will explore a theoretical understanding of resilience with conference delegates at a resilience workshop, a scoping review of the existing literature and qualitative interviews with people with dementia and their carers. Phase 2 will develop a resilience-building framework through qualitative interviews with healthcare professionals, secondary data analysis of the ACTIFCare project data investigating service use and wellbeing, and a conference workshop on resilience. Phase 3 will explore the feasibility of the framework through focus groups and an evaluation questionnaire with healthcare practitioners working in different settings (NHS memory clinic, care home, and hospital). It is hoped that this framework for people with dementia and their carers will enable them to build resilience to live as well as possible and achieve more positive outcomes when facing one of life’s greatest challenges.
