Research summary
418,000 people live in care homes in England (Laing and Buisson, 2016), the average age being 85.These individuals rely on care-home staff to provide care and support that enables them to live their lives in the best way possible (Goodman et al 2017). The Enhanced Health in Care Homes Framework (EHCH) part of the NHS Longterm plam (DH,2019) is a whole system approach for developing high quality person-centred care. However, many care homes are not yet engaged in a substantial proportion of EHCH. Quality of care in care homes and ways of improving it are still poorly understood, research has generally been top-down, with little focus on the experiences of residents, families and care professionals.
The aim of this study is to explore what works, doesn’t work and what would support engagement in the EHCH framework in a collaborative and sustainable way.
The study will take place in eight care homes from the perspectives of all those involved using a participatory mixed method case study design (Yin, 1989, Stake 2005, Baum et al 1996).Participatory research groups will be set up in each care home to explore the process of the research and the implementation of EHCH. About 100 Semi-structured interviews will take place with residents, family/caregivers, home care staff, professionals and key stakeholders across 8 sites. Non-participant observation will take place in each care home over the course of 4 months alongside analysis of routine documents. Data will be analysed through reading and rereading, memoing, coding and constant comparison (Charmaz, 2006). Data sources will be analysed for each care home and then be brought together to identify themes across the care homes as a whole. These findings will then be shared at a stakeholder dissemination event before further dissemination and the development of models for practice and further research.REC name
