Research summary
Research has shown that obesity surgery is a highly effective way of promoting weight loss. Furthermore, it is known that obesity surgery can have a number of extended beneficial health effects. For example, it can attenuate the metabolic effects of type 2 diabetes to a certain extent and improve the cardiovascular health of patients. It is thought that these effects are not simply caused by a reduction in the absorption of food from the gut but actually due to more complex changes, including an effect on the nervous system within the gut and on the hormones produced by the body in response to food. These hormones and factors are produced at various sites within the body including within the gut. This study will assess the effects of the different types of weight loss surgery on patients' metabolic profiles, and whether the levels of any of these hormones or metabolic factors can predict which patients will respond best to such surgery.
