Research summary
Marked fatigue is a common consequence of brain injury that can be an obstacle to returning to real life activities such as work and home life. It is not uncommon for brain injury patients to struggle to manage their post-injury fatigue because they find it difficult to gauge which strategies or techniques will benefit them and what will exacerbate their fatigue. After a brain injury, patients often find it very difficult to manage their fatigue as they are not used to their limits.
This study will involve people who have sustained a brain injury, who will be attending a 4-week fatigue management group at hospital. The participants for the group will be recruited via members of the brain injury team; occupational therapists, clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists and physiotherapists. These participants should be suitable for a fatigue management group and report fatigue as one of their main symptoms.
The participants are asked to complete a fatigue impact questionnaire at point of referral if possible, before they attend the first session of the fatigue management group along with a pre-group assessment (which includes questions about their pre-existing knowledge about fatigue management), after the 4-week group has been completed along with a post-group evaluation form and around 3 months after the group (follow up). This study will be mainly using data that has already been collected by the brain injury team. By comparing the data from before, after and follow up, the study aims to quantify the effect of a fatigue management group on brain injury patients who are struggling to successfully manage their post-injury fatigue.
Please note this study will be for the use of the data that is already been collected.
