Research summary
Agitation and restlessness are issues that are frequently encountered in individuals who are reaching the end of their lives. Current management involves the use of sedative medication. Use of this medication whilst easing the symptoms of agitation may affect the consciousness levels of individuals. Spikenard essential oil is reputed to reduce agitation and restlessness in individuals. The aim of this pilot study is to evaluate the effectiveness of Spikenard essential oil in the management of agitation and restless in patients who are receiving end of life care in the inpatient unit at North Devon Hospice. This innovative approach may be less burdensome for patients and less sedating, enabling them to feel less agitated and restless without feeling over sedated.
