Research summary
Heart failure occurs when the heart is unable to deliver sufficient contraction to maintain adequate blood supply to the body. Evidence has shown that promoting the use of glucose as fuel for the heart is beneficial. GLP-1 is an naturally occurring gut hormone which has metabolic actions on insulin. It is also now thought to have a protective role in the heart. In animal studies, GLP-1 has shown a benefit in models of heart failure. This study will study the effect of GLP-1 on heart performance in patients with heart failure.
