  • Research summary

In humans, supplementation studies that have assessed the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) on cognitive function in healthy adults have varied widely in their methodology and have yielded inconclusive results. Several methodological factors that have been identified as potentially contributing to these weak conclusions include dose, duration of treatment, sample population and appropriate selection of outcome measures. In addition, very little is known about the effects of EPA supplementation on cognitive outcome despite recent evidence from short term trials indicating treatment with EPA in healthy adults may be relevant to cognitive function in this population. Lastly, there is also some evidence that bioavailability of fatty acids may be greater when taken before sleep. The present study will therefore investigate the effects of EPA- and DHA-enriched oils dosed at bed time, on cognitive function (episodic memory, attention, working memory, executive function), subjective mood, alertness and mental fatigue after 26 weeks daily dietary supplementation.
