Research summary
Complications arising from abdominal surgery can occur due to reduced blood supply to the large bowel (colon). Conditioning the colon to states of low blood flow before surgery using exercise, which results in diversion of blood from the bowel to other organs, may result in greater tolerance of such states in the period during and following surgery. We aim to assess the impact of exercise on the colon by measuring the changes in blood flow occurring in the blood vessels supplying the colon visible after a period of exercise using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.
