Research summary
A feasibility research study performed at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Adult patients referred for an EEG (Electroencephalogram) are studied to look at their brain activity after their first seizure. Descriptions of a patient's seizure (what they do or what happens during a seizure) which are included on the doctor's referral form are investigated to identify whether specific descriptions are more associated with certain EEG results (i.e. abnormal, normal, suggestive of epilepsy)than other descriptions. Results could help to prioritise which patients should receive sooner appointments because it may be possible to tell at referral which patients are more likely to have an abnormal EEG.
Patients do not need to undergo any additional tests or investigations to those their doctor has requested. It only includes patients who have consented for their anonymised EEG reports, referrals and clinic letters to be analysed.REC name
