  • Research summary

The purpose of this research is to explore the educational experiences of children and young people with the medical condition Cystic Fibrosis (CF). This research is important as we do not know what it is like for children with CF at school. There are studies that have considered the education of children with medical conditions. However, very few of these studies included children with CF and all these studies involved them alongside others with quite different conditions, leading to inadequate conclusions and recommendations about appropriate educational provision. Significantly, research identifies that children with medical conditions are a vulnerable group of children at school.
There will be two phases to the research. In the first phase, a questionnaire will be administered to school-age children attending a paediatric CF Unit about their educational experiences. In the second phase, three children and their parents will be selected for interview. The study also seeks to recruit one post school-age young person via the CF unit who would be willing to be interviewed about their educational experiences. Phase two of the research is also interested in key stakeholder understandings of the needs of children with CF in education, including teachers and/or other school personnel, hospital personnel such as members of the CF service and hospital teachers. By involving these stakeholders in the research alongside children themselves, it is hoped that a richer picture of the educational experiences of children with CF will be gained. Therefore, stakeholder participants connected to the three school-age children in phase one of the study will also be interviewed.
It is anticipated that the research will make recommendations for appropriate educational provision for children and young people with CF.
